Last Monday I found myself in the unique position of being

a) 20 minutes from Bath by train

b) having six hours to kill until I had to catch my train towards Gatwick airport.

What can I say?

Six hours are not enough!!

There shall be

I wonder whether that poor guy was bullied as a kid for being called Marmaduke Peacocke or whether that was just a run of the mill name back then...

Great Pool of the Roman Baths as seen from current-day street level. 2000 years ago, the street was about 4 meters lower.

Originally, a 20 meter domed roof covered the pool, as seen in the next picture.

Head of Gorgon/possibly Neptune, as often Minerva temples were jointly dedicated to Neptune as well.

The Goddess Luna. She does look a bit dreamy, doesn't she?

Head of Minerva.

Overflow for the pools. Somehow this seemed to be the most mysterious and magical place of the whole structure.

I had a nice chat with this wealthy Roman lady. She was quite horrified when I told her that I live in Caledonia, north of the Hadrians Wall and thus outside of the protection of the Empire as well as outside of reach regarding any kind of professional Roman hair care. She urged me to take a carving (aka photo) of her so I could instruct my personal slave in the latest Roman fashion.

Hot spring. More than a million litres of hot water bubbles up. Daily.

I found no indication of this being true in any of the shops!!

*snerk* I tried to capture some of the typical architecture but left out all the Jane Austen stuff. Frankly, I never really got into her and didn't have time to linger. Maybe next time...
