Review Responses Hysteria Chapter 7
Oct. 21st, 2010 12:59 pmPandalei - Thank you for reading and reviewing! I think Draco is completely horrified and possibly out of his depth but he tries :)
scarlett78 - Thank you! Sorry for the long wait, I'll try to do better!
angeles - Thank you for sticking with the story! Hermione is rescued but I fear that's just the start od it...
annelaure - Thank you for reading and reviewing! At first I thought the subject is just a bit of strange history but when I started researching I couold hardly believe my eyes! Pretty much every big name in medical history of the last 2000 years has something to say on hysteria. Even one of the most heralded German doctors introducing all sorts of hydrotherapy was highly involved in hysteria treatment. That's something nobody tells you about when you go tread water!
Autumn - Thank you for reading and reviewing! I only post stories at archives because, well, that's what they are there for. I do not post at LJ at all, since I use this journal also for other purposes than fandom related things and I usually f-lock HP-related posts. Review responses are an exception :) I think there are a whole lot of stories on AFF that cover a very wide variety of subjects and many are much more disturbing than Hysteria, at least for me. Regarding the upcoming chapters, Hermione will be dealing with the aftermath of being a torture/rape victim and I promise that the last part of chapter 8 was the last bit of disturbing content. From there on, the story will be about healing.
Maseiden - Thank you! I hope I am doing all the medical stuff right! I have mixed treatments from several eras but many of them were most popular in Victorian times. Parts of medical history is truly terrifying. I've been looking through insane asylum documents and had to realise that the only 'crime' or 'condition' many of these people had was 'being poor'. I think I will be collecting some links and pictures to illustrate the story.
luna4917 - Thank you for reading and reviewing! Yes, Draco was quick and assertive in saving her and now he has a to deal with his guilt and her vulnerability...
paigeey07 - Thank you for reading and reviewing! She is out but she is not out of danger, yet.
nitesfool - Thank you! Neither the keeper nor de Belleme is going to give up that easily.
Sakura - Thank you! The story is definitely not abandoned and chapter nine is nearly finished, it's just difficult to write at the moment...
lemonade8 - Thank you for reading and reviewing! In the story, hysteria has nerver ceased to be a legitimate diagnosis in the wizarding world. In the Muggle world, the only reason why the diagnosis was no longer used was because the 'treatment' vibrators started showing up in the first porn films in teh 1920s. All of a sudden, pelvic massage had become something sexual, which, of course, was not suitable for a medical treatment. As there are no films in the wizarding world, this developement has bypassed its medical community. There will be something about this conflict in the next chapter :) I like your ideas for revenge!
UnseenLibrarian - Thank you! Draco and Hermione are in for a difficult recovery. De Belleme and the keeper will not be thrown off that easily, though...
mirrorofrapture - Thank you! The keeper really is a victim in his own way, his sense of reality is completely warped by his environment. Of course, this does not justify his actions...
Cosmyk Angel - Thank you for reading and reviewing! There are more chapters to come! Chapter 8 had the last potentially disturbing part and from here on, it will be about healing and dealing with life after what happened.
Anonymous - Thank you so much! I am not a native speaker of English, so this really means a lot to me! When researching for the story, I was horrified many, many times and sometimes even had to stop reading and continue another day because the images and descriptions were so horrible. Some of the issues relating to hysteria as a legitimate diagnosis will be addressed in the next chapter. The wizarding world has not such a good track rate of dealing with psychological trauma (have some chocolate, Ginny) and mental ilnesses. I imagine that many Muggle-borns would seek help in the Muggle world. I also find it rather strange in canon that, although children appear to wear Muggle clothes for instance, they seem to lose any sort of connection during adulthood. In a way, the wizarding world and the Muggle world are seperated to the extreme, probably also the medical systems. I'd love to hear what you think about this chapter, since Harry has come into the story and the general public has found out :) It will also become a bit clearer why everybody is keeping quiet about this. It's hard to eradicate something that has been accepted for 2000 years...
Lucidia89 - Thank you for reading and reviewing! It will be very, very difficult for her. She might never be the same again.
Alkeni Synair - Thank you for reading and reviewing! I'll do my best to update more quickly from now on!
anon_drarry - Thank you! I completely agree - medical practices were horrifying until very recently (and who knows what we might think of some of today's practices in the near future?) One doctor found that frightening hysterical or mentally ill patients seemed to 'calm' them, so his treatment consisted of threatening them with red hot iron pokers on a regular basis. The next chapters will deal with healing and what can and cannot be done against de Belleme.
Anon - Thank you so much! I will do my best to update more regularly, circumstances are working against me at the moment...
