Shortly after the reunification, Berlin experienced an influx of highly educated and very "hip" people. They confronted the astonished average working class and a bit gruff Berliner with lanyards and "coffee to go". Or rather Latte Macchiato to go. We did not have to wait long for the first Starbucks to set up shop.

Now, these people declared certain parts of Berlin to be wonderful and the rest basically to be uninhabitable, resulting in disgustingly "cool" and ridiculously overpriced quarters.

When Tania was born, one could be sure to be in a "cool" area when there were only joggers = prams with three rather than four wheels to be seen.

Nowadays, said prams appear to be woefully inaccaptable and thus to be had cheaply on eBay.

Problem? I didn't like the three-wheelers back then and I don't like them now. I don't need an extra long pram with a tiny, fragile net underneath. I need a working horse that can transport not only the baby but also the groceries.

The other end of the spectrum are Bugaboo prams and vintage Silver Cross prams from the UK.

After ranting about the three-wheelers to my mum and ranting some more about prams that cost around 1000 Euro just because the manufacturer managed a clever product placement on Sex and the City, I proceeded to rant about the fact that I just want a decent pram that does not make me take out a personal loan.

Mum: So. Silver Cross makes you... cool?

Me: *shrugs* Now THAT is debatable.

Mum: I have one.

Me: *goggles*

Apparently, in the mid 1970s my parents had friends, who were crazy willing and rich enough to go to England expressly to buy a pram, which they then passed on to my parents.

My husband and my father got it down from the attic. We whipped off the protective cover and I could hardly believe that the pram had been in the attic for 30 (in words: thirty!) years. Besides needing a bit of polish for the chrome, it is in pristine condition. Only the rubber bits of the brakes had started crumbling sometime in the last three decades BUT: Silver Cross still sells replacements for that!

Now I am the proud owner of a vintage "Rolls Royce of prams".

I can see it clearly. Social advancement is only a matter of time now.

*sniggers*
