It's been eight years...
Feb. 1st, 2010 10:53 pmExactly eight years ago, I stood in a small Danish town hall, wearing my mother's homemade 1976 hippie wedding dress, holding a small bouquet of mixed white flowers.
The bouquet was so tiny, because we had exchanged all the Euros we could spare into Danish Crowns and had paid the hotel and food for the week we had to stay in Denmark; and on Thursday afternoon, all we were left with, were 80-something Danish Crowns, less than 10 Euros, so we simply handed all our cash to the florist and told her to put something white together. And she did a very nice job.
My mother as our only guest was taking pictures, while our witnesses, two women, who worked in the town hall, looked on. I think we were the only couple with a wedding guest that day. Who needs Vegas?
The mayor said something in English, but I could not understand him. Maybe because of his accent, maybe because of the nervous buzzing in my ears. I did not think that he started the sentence with 'Do you, ...', so I simply answered with 'Yes.', which would have been the appropriate response in Germany.
Then I guess my husband also said 'Yes.' or something to that effect, because the next thing I know is that we are signing papers. I don't even clearly remember whether we kissed. I think so, but it must have been rather quick.
We walked out and I thought: 'Good Lord, what have we just done??'
After a rather funny episode with the next couple, who had forgotten their passports at the hotel and now had to run through town in high heels and finery, we tried to find a restaurant for lunch where we could pay in Euros.
No.
It was early February and the town was asleep, the tourists would not show up until much later in the year.
Then we thought we might visit a moderately famous museum, which was also closed until March.
In the end we went to the nearby estate of the Crown Prince of Denmark, found some nice scenery for a few pictures and basically decided to go home and conceive Tania.
Well, we did not actually decide this, but did it anyhow.
Happy Anniversary :)
